Official Twitter App for iPhone and iPod touch Launched Today

The long-awaited official Twitter App for iPhone and iPod touch has finally launched in the US iTunes App Store today as a free download. Essentially, it’s Tweetie, which Twitter recently acquired, with some new bits and bobs. Announcing the new Twitter for iPhone, the official Twitter blog says that the Mobile team “have artfully crafted an application that takes the Twitter experience to a whole new level of awesomeness!”

You don’t even need a Twitter account to explore the new app – if you’re not given to partaking in the joys of tweeting yourself, you can still use the app to view trending topics, Top Tweets, find popular users and read public tweets that are geographically close by. And should all that good stuff make you want to dip your toes into the Twitter waters and start tweeting, the app affords you the opportunity to sign up for an account quickly and easily, without ever having to visit the Twitter web site.
