Does a Jailbreaked iPhone be Traced by Provider ? [Q]

My wife had a basic plan and using a basic phone.  She tried to use my iPhone 3G and the provider automatically put a data feature on her plan.  My question is, does the provider can still trace that my wife is using an iPhone if it was jailbreaked or unlock ?
