Help Me Unlock iPhone 4 – Ganesh from Oman

Recently one of my friend had returned to Oman from USA and he got me an iPhone 4. But I’m unable to use the phone and i learnt that it requires unlocking to be used with a local carrier here in Oman . The firmware version in my iPhone is iOS 4.0.2. Can any one help me whether this phone
can be used in any country without unlocking the same? If i need to unlock, please guide me the steps to followed to unlock my iPhone 4 .
