Unlock International Carrier on Iphone 4 ?

I just got my new Iphone 4. I need to unlock my phone so that I can use an international sim card.
Can someone help me with the steps (jailbreak and then unlock ?? ) Also, I’ve read that there’s a risk of ‘bricking’ the phone.

Has that happened to anyone ?
